Telecommunications sector in Cameroon is not highly developed. However, it has seen a great increase since 1990, due to privatization of telecom companies and government's strong policy towards communications development. Until 1990, like in every African country, the services in Cameroon had been provided by the state-owned company, namely, Camtel. Camtel was the major fixed-line telephone service provider, and later the main mobile service and Internet provider. Still, with the development of competitive market, Camtel was privatized, and two more companies were created in the mobile telephony sector. Along with a certain regulatory agency they provided competition necessary for healthy market's development.

Nowadays Camtel is considered an incumbent company and still plays a huge role in telecommunications sphere. In addition to fixed-line and mobile telephony it provides Internet services. Several private companies now compete for its accessible share. MTN and Orange represent the two main mobile operators in Cameroon. They provide mobile and internet services on a regular basis, but still technical problems sometimes arise. Prepaid phone cards are also available. Landline telephony has seen no major development over the recent years. That is why the equipment is outdated, and the number of regular users falls gradually, nowadays being only 1 user per 100 persons. Connectivity with Europe and Asia is provided by submarine cable. Roaming exists in several countries. Overall, telecommunications in Cameroon are not as stable as they can be.

Cameroon has several ISPs: Camnet (Camtel subsidiary), Creolink, Ditof, ICC, Douala.com1 and BaaP. The highest connection speed offered is 2 Mbit/sec on average. In some regions Internet connection is unstable. The main ISP is Camnet, with others borrowing the services from it. However, there is a growing tendency among mobile operators to acquire ISPs. The latter, in their turn, cooperate to introduce VoIP telephony in the country.

According to the latest data, there is only one television broadcasting station in Cameroon, and over a dozen of radio broadcasting ones.
